Christians can be proud of the Treaty of Waitangi. It came about because of the efforts of English Christians to ensure that the Maori were treated fairly - be granted citizenship and that their lands would not be taken from them. It was part of a race against those who wanted to profiteer by selling land to immigrants at a great profit with no regard for Maori. Today we trace those origins. Things did not go well subsequently, but the intention of the treaty flowed from gospel-based social justice.
