Climate Change Concern

Picture
Our Diocese has a commitment to conservation in line with the Marks of Mission and employs a Sustainability Fieldworker: Cathy Bi-Riley.

See here for the Auckland Anglican Response to Climate Change: https://aucklandanglican.org.nz/what-we-do/social-justice/

From that page we have here:
  1. the PDF Personal Ideas for Climate Action
  2. Links to two Carbon Calculators:

Our Bishop, the Rt Revd Ross Bay recorded an interview with the Sustainability Fieldworker, Cathy Bi-Riley recently about the COP26 conference.

Other Resources
  • Here is a good personal calculator: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-46459714.
It illustrates how modifying our diet can have a major impact, and makes a comparison between our food and our petrol consumption. (They are UK figures, so would need fine tuning for NZ.)
  • Dr Dave Lowe is a NZ atmospheric scientist who has studied atmospheric change over the last 50 years.  His book is "The alarmist: fifty years of measuring climate change."
  • “OMD- Change the World by changing one meal a day” by Suzi Amis Cameron.  Note: It includes recommended further reading and useful websites for positive action.

Practical measures that individuals can make include:
  • Planting native trees:
This website allows us to sponsor the planting of native trees which will help by acting as a carbon sink: https://www.treesthatcount.co.nz/
This group works to restore native habitat in our Hibiscus Coast area: https://restorehb.org.nz/
  • Dietary changes.
  • Change over to electric vehicles.
  • Installation of solar panels on their homes (where practical).
  • An invitation to listen to Kim Hill’s interview of Dave Lowe on Wednesday 13th November.
  • Encourage further agricultural research to reduce the methane problem.
