As we continue exploring the Nicene Creed on the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, this week we turn to the section on the divinity of Christ.
This year is the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea which formulated the Nicene Creed. This is an important statement of Christian belief. Today we start a preaching series on the Creed with belief in the Father.
The film called "The First Hymn" has recently been released about a fragment of Egyptian papyrus dated to 250-290AD which has the text and musical notation for an early Christian hymn. At that time, the church was persecuted by the Roman empire. Those Christian called for silence in nature so their praise could be heard, as they sang to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They were confident that heavenly powers were praising with them. Today we examine that hymn and then join in singing in the modern rendition written by Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." It is possible that Jesus was thinking about Psalm 24 when he said this. Certainly, it seems to have been behind references we explored in James 4 and Luke 11. And quite wonderfully, Luke 11 led us to the martyrdom of Stephen - our patron saint whom we remember today!
